Dr M.B. Khanyile

Dr Khanyile is currently serving as the Director of the Centre for Military Studies (CEMIS) and Director of Defence Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (DAIRU) at the Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University. He has served at executive level in both public and private sectors. He has received various ministerial assignments including being a committee member that drafted the Defence Review 2015, a non-executive director of the Armscor SOC Board, and a national coordinator of the National Defence Industry Council. He previously served as the Director of Planning and Programming in the Department of Defence. In the private sector he was an executive at Absa Bank and Barclays Africa, and the executive chairman of Masharps Investment Holdings. He is the editor of the Defence Innovation and Management in Africa (DIMA) journal, and he also sits in the editorial boards of the Journal of Central and Eastern European Studies of Óbuda University (Hungary) and the Africa Journal of Employee Relations from the University of South Africa (UNISA). He holds a PhD in International Politics and other qualifications in military science, law and business. He provides supervisory and moderation services for post-graduate students at Stellenbosch University, Wits University, University of South Africa (UNISA) and Da Vinci Business School. He has written, presented and published papers on matters pertaining to global security, defence planning, defence industry and governance.
